Homeland Security urging PC users to uninstall QuickTime

Published on 4/19/2016

If you are a PC owner and you have the Apple video player QuickTime installed on your computer, the Department of Homeland Security is urging you to take it off. The United States Computer Readiness Team (US-CERT)- a division of Homeland Security- says that Apple has stopped providing security updates for QuickTime for Windows. Because of this, having QuickTime on your PC could open you up to security risks.

“Computers running QuickTime for Windows will continue to work after support ends. However, using unsupported software may increase the risks from viruses and other security threats,” US-CERT wrote in an advisory on their website. “Potential negative consequences include loss of confidentiality, integrity, or availability of data, as well as damage to system resources or business assets.”

Computers that are running older versions of Apple iTunes may have QuickTime for Windows, though more recent versions do not include the video player. US-CERT’s advisory does not apply to Apple users with QuickTime.
