CEU Requirements
The purpose of continuing education for personnel licensed to operate drinking water and domestic wastewater treatment facilities is to encourage the dissemination of information on current or new technology and improve skills in plant management and operations.
WHAT is a CEU?
A CEU is a credit unit given for continuing education. "Credit unit" or "CEU" means ten hours of contact time, or one CEU equals 10 hours of continuing education contact time. CEU's may be in the form of classroom time, seminar, self-study programs, or conferences. CEU's are required for renewal of operator licenses, and CEU's must be approved by the Operator Certification Program (OCP), or an agent of the OCP, for credit to be given. The FWPCOA is an authorized provider.
The required number of units shall be earned in the two years directly preceding the request for license renewal as follows:
| A licenses will require | 2.0 CEU's | C licenses will require | 1.0 CEU |
| B licenses will require | 2.0 CEU's | D licenses will require | 0.5 CEU's |
| *Dual A or B licenses - 3 CEU's (1.5 CEU's for each license). CEU's for all other combinations of dual licensing shall be additive. | |||

A certified operator who is teaching an approved continuing education course shall, upon receipt of documentation, receive credit equal to the CEU's approved for that course.
A certified operator who teaches an approved residence course may use this experience for one-half of the required CEU's needed to renew his license.
Certificates of completion showing the continuing education credit shall be filed with the request for licensure renewal form and the renewal fee. Electronic confirmation of completion will be accepted from participating institutions in lieu of a certificate of completion. A request for renewal shall be denied if required continuing education cannot be confirmed. The renewal fee shall not be refunded if the license is denied because of insufficient continuing education units.
Approval of CEU courses shall be accomplished in accordance with the Department's "Manual for Approving Continuing Education Courses for Operator Licensing," latest edition, that may be obtained by writing to Department of Environmental Protection, Operator Certification Program, Mail Station 3506, 2600 Blair Stone Road, Tallahassee, Florida 32399-2400.
Topics for continuing education include operation and control of a treatment plant, troubleshooting treatment processes, health and safety, employment and community right-to-know notification procedures, toxic and hazardous materials handling procedures, solids and residuals prevention, supervision and management, basic chemistry and biology, mathematics of the treatment process, laboratory sampling procedures, equipment maintenance and repair, computer applications for water or wastewater treatment, blue print reading, and government rules and procedures.
